Chena Koottan / Yam Curry

Ingredients:

500 gm yam, peeled and cubed
1 cup grated coconut
4-5 green chillies, slit
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
2 shallots, chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tsp ghee
3 dry red chillies
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 sprig curry leaves
salt to taste
1 tbsp coconut oil

Preparation:

  1. In a pan, add the cubed yam with chilli powder, turmeric powder, green chillies and salt and cook adding enough water until it is soft.
  2. Grind together grated coconut, cumin seeds and garlic and keep it aside.
  3. Mash the cooked yam using a spoon and add the ground coconut mixture into this cooked yam and mix well.
  4. Adjust the salt and boil it for 5-6 minutes or until the raw taste is gone.
  5. Add ghee to this and mix well. Switch off the flame.
  6. Heat coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add shallots, dry red chillies and curry leaves.
  7. Add this seasoning into the curry and mix well. Serve hot with rice or kanji…
