Prawn Roast With Shallots / Chemmeen Cheriya Ulli Roast


1/2 kg prawns, cleaned
22-25 shallots, sliced
10 garlic cloves, chopped
1″ piece ginger, chopped
1 medium tomato, chopped
1 tbsp + 2 tbsp kashmiri chilli powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp lime juice / vinegar
1/2 tsp crushed pepper
1/4 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
2 sprigs curry leaves
salt to taste
4-5 tbsp coconut oil


  1. Clean the prawns and marinate it with 1 tbsp kashmiri chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and lime juice / vinegar and keep it aside for 1/2 an hour.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and fry the marinated prawns at medium flame on both sides. Keep it aside.
  3. In the same oil, add mustard seeds. When it splutters, add chopped garlic and ginger and saute.
  4. Add sliced shallots and saute well adding little salt till golden brown.
  5. Add 2 tbsp kashmiri chilli powder and saute for a minute till raw smell goes.
  6. Add chopped tomato and mix well. Add 1/2 cup of hot water, mix well and cook for 3 minutes.
  7. Add fried prawns, curry leaves, crushed pepper and garam masala and mix well and cook covered at medium flame for 3 minutes.
  8. Open the lid and mix well till the water dries. Switch off the flame and serve hot..
