Nadan Njandu Curry / Crab Curry

Ingredients:

1/2 kg crab, cleaned
1 onion, sliced
15-20 shallots, sliced
1 piece ginger, crushed
5-6 garlic cloves, crushed
3 green chillies, slit
1 big tomato, sliced
1 sprig curry leaves
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1 tbsp kashmiri chilli powder
1/4 tsp + 1/4 tsp garam masala
3/4 tsp pepper powder
1 cup coconut milk
salt to taste
3 tbsp coconut oil

Preparation:

  1. Clean and cut the crabs into pieces and keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a manchatti / earthen pot and splutter mustard seeds.
  3. Add sliced onion, shallots and salt and saute well till onion gets transparent.
  4. Add crushed ginger-garlic and saute well till raw smell goes.
  5. Add slit green chillies and saute well. Add sliced tomato and saute well till soft.
  6. Then add turmeric powder, coriander powder, kashmiri chilli powder, 1/4 tsp garam masala and pepper powder and mix well till raw smell goes.
  7. Add 1 cup warm water and salt and mix well.
  8. Add cleaned crab into this and mix well till the masala is well coated with the crabs.
  9. Add curry leaves and cook covered for 15 minutes until the crabs are cooked well.
  10. Now add coconut milk and 1/4 tsp garam masala and mix.
  11. Adjust salt and cook covered at low flame for 5 minutes.
  12. Switch off the flame and keep it covered until ready to use…Serve with rice, pathiri, neer dosa etc…
