Chicken – Vellarikka ( Yellow Cucumber ) Curry


1/2 kg chicken, cut into pieces
1 1/2 cup vellarikka/ yellow cucumber
2 onions, sliced
1 tbsp crushed ginger
1 tbsp crushed garlic
3 green chillies, slit
2 tomatoes , chopped
1 tbsp coriander powder
2 tbsp chilli powder
1 tsp pepper powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp turmeric powder
salt to taste
2 sprigs curry leaves
1/2 tsp fennel seeds
1 cinnamon piece
2 cloves
2 cardamoms
4 tbsp oil


  1. Heat oil in a clay pot / pan and add fennel seeds, cinnamon, cloves and cardamoms.
  2. Add sliced onions and saute well adding salt.
  3. Add crushed garlic, ginger, green chillies and chopped tomatoes and saute well.
  4. Add coriander powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder and garam masala and saute well till raw smell goes.
  5. Add cleaned chicken pieces and vellarikka pieces and mix well. Adjust the salt.
  6. Add about 2 cups of water and cook covered till done at medium flame, stirring in between.
  7. Switch off the flame and add curry leaves and keep it covered for 5 minutes.
  8. Serve with rice, pathiri, ghee rice, neer dosa etc…
