Bread Fruit / Kadachakka Masala Thoran

A traditional South Indian dish made with breadfruit and coconut, packed with flavor.

Ingredients:

1 bread fruit / kadachakka / sheema chakka

1 onion, chopped

3 tbsp coconut pieces

1 tsp ginger, crushed

1 tsp garlic, crushed

1 sprig curry leaves

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1 1/2 tsp chilli powder

1 tsp coriander powder

1/4 tsp garam masala

1/2 tsp fennel powder

3/4 cup grated coconut

salt to taste

2 dry red chillies

1 tsp mustard seeds

2 tbsp oil

Preparation:

  1. Peel the bread fruit and chop them into small pieces and keep inside the water.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and add dry red chillies.
  3. Add chopped onion, coconut pieces, crushed garlic, ginger and curry leaves and saute well till raw smell goes at medium flame.
  4. Reduce the flame to low and add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala and fennel powder and saute for a minute.
  5. Add grated coconut into this and mix well.
  6. Add chopped bread fruit and salt and mix well.
  7. Add about 1/2 cup of water and mix well and cook covered on low flame, stirring in between.
  8. Adjust the salt and cook until it is dry...Remove from the flame and serve hot with rice...
