Chena Varavu / Yam Thoran

Ingredients:

2 cups elephant yam / chena, peeled and cubed

1/2 cup grated coconut

3 cloves garlic, crushed

1/2-1 tsp chilly powder

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

1/2-1 tsp tamarind pulp / small piece tamarind

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 sprig curry leaves

2 tsp oil

salt to taste

Preparation:

  1. Peel and chop yam into small cubes.
  2. In a pan, add chopped yam and cook it with grated coconut, 2 crushed garlic, chilly powder, turmeric powder, tamarind pulp and salt adding little water.
  3. Heat oil in a small pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add 1 crushed garlic and curry leaves and fry. Add this to the cooked yam and mix well. Serve as a side dish for rice....
  • You can also pressure cook yam together with other ingredients adding little water for 1 whistle...Don't overcook the yam..Then do the seasoning....
