Ingredients:


2 medium raw mangoes / pacha manga

lemon sized tamarind

3 tbsp ginger, finely chopped

5-6 green chillies, finely chopped

1 tsp chilli powder

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

3-4 tbsp grated jaggery, or as required

1/4 tsp roasted fenugreek powder

a pinch of asafoetida

salt to taste

1 1/2 tbsp coconut oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 sprig curry leaves

2 dry red chillies


Preparation:


  1. Peel and grate the raw mangoes and keep it aside.
  2. Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water, extract its juice and keep it aside.
  3. Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a pan and add chopped ginger and green chillies and saute well. Switch off the flame.
  4. In a pan, add the grated mango, tamarind water, chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt and boil well at medium flame adding 3/4-1 cup of water till mango turns soft and well cooked.
  5. Reduce the flame to low and add fried ginger-green chillies and cook for 5 minutes, stirring in between.
  6. Add grated jaggery and mix well and boil well at low flame till it thickens.
  7. Adjust the salt and add fenugreek powder and asafoetida and mix well. Switch off the flame.
  8. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  9. Add dry red chillies and curry leaves and fry and add this to the puli inji and keep covered for 5 minutes.
  10. Let it cool and store it in an air tight container. Serve with rice, biriyani etc...
