Pachakaya Kadala Puzhukku / Black Chickpeas With Raw Plantain

Ingredients:
2 big raw plantains / raw banana / pachakaya / kaya
1/2-3/4 cup kadala / black chickpeas
1 cup grated coconut
2-3 green chillies
3 shallots
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
2 garlic cloves
1 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp pepper powder
1 tsp mustard seeds
1-2 sprig curry leaves
2 dry red chillies
salt to taste
1 tbsp oil
Preparation:
- Soak black chickpeas/ kadala overnight in water and pressure cook it adding 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, little salt and enough water till soft. Keep it aside.
- Peel and chop the plantains into pieces and put them in a bowl of water.
- Grind grated coconut with green chillies, shallots, cumin seeds, pepper powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and garlic to a coarse mixture and keep it aside.
- In a thick bottomed pan, add chopped raw plantains, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, salt and 1/2 cup of water and cook covered at low flame till done.
- Then add cooked kadala to this cooked raw plantain and mix well.
- Add the ground coconut mixture and little water and mix well. Adjust the salt and cook covered for 4-5 minutes at low flame.
- Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add dry red chillies and curry leaves and pour this over the puzhukku and mix well. Serve with rice or kanji...
