Ingredients:


1 cup toor dal / thuvaraparippu

1 medium onion, sliced

1 medium tomato, chopped

3 green chillies, slit

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

8 garlic cloves, chopped

2 dry red chillies

6 shallots, sliced

1 sprig curry leaves

salt to taste

3 tbsp coconut oil


Preparation:


  1. In a pressure cooker, add toor dal, sliced onion, tomato, green chillies, turmeric powder, salt and 3 cups of water and cook covered for 1 whistle at high flame and then 2 whistles at low flame.
  2. Once the pressure releases after 15-20 minutes, open the cooker and mix well.
  3. Heat coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  4. Reduce the flame to low and add chopped garlic and dry red chillies and saute for 8-10 seconds.
  5. Add sliced shallots and curry leaves and saute well till shallots turn golden brown at medium flame.
  6. Then add this to the cooked dal and keep covered for 10 minutes.
  7. Mix well and serve with rice, chapathi etc...
