Ingredients:
1 cup toor dal / thuvaraparippu
1 medium onion, sliced
1 medium tomato, chopped
3 green chillies, slit
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
8 garlic cloves, chopped
2 dry red chillies
6 shallots, sliced
1 sprig curry leaves
salt to taste
3 tbsp coconut oil
Preparation:
- In a pressure cooker, add toor dal, sliced onion, tomato, green chillies, turmeric powder, salt and 3 cups of water and cook covered for 1 whistle at high flame and then 2 whistles at low flame.
- Once the pressure releases after 15-20 minutes, open the cooker and mix well.
- Heat coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
- Reduce the flame to low and add chopped garlic and dry red chillies and saute for 8-10 seconds.
- Add sliced shallots and curry leaves and saute well till shallots turn golden brown at medium flame.
- Then add this to the cooked dal and keep covered for 10 minutes.
- Mix well and serve with rice, chapathi etc...
