Pottukadala - Thenga Chutney / Roasted Gram - Red Coconut Chutney

Ingredients:

1 1/2 tbsp roasted gram / pottukadala

2 dry red chillies

1 kashmiri dry chilli

1/3 cup grated coconut

1/2 tsp tamarind

2 shallots

1/2 tsp kashmiri chilli powder

salt to taste

3/4 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp urad dal

1 sprig curry leaves

1 tbsp oil

Preparation:

  1. In a pan, add dry red chillies and kashmiri dry chilli and roast for a minute over medium flame.
  2. Add roasted gram to this and roast for a minute. Switch off the flame.
  3. In a blender, add the roasted ingredients, grated coconut, tamarind, shallots, kashmiri chilli powder and salt and grind to a smooth paste adding water as required. Transfer it to a serving bowl.
  4. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and fry urad dal and curry leaves.
  5. Pour this tempering over chutney and serve with dosa / idli / vada…
