Paal Chammanthi / Coconut Chutney with Milk


3/4 cup grated coconut
2 green chillies
small piece ginger
1 tbsp roasted gram / pottukadala
2 sprig curry leaves
1 cup milk, at room temperature
salt to taste
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal
2 dry red chillies
a pinch of asafoetida
1 tbsp oil


  1. In a blender, add grated coconut, green chillies, ginger, few curry leaves, roasted gram and salt and grind together adding about 1 cup of milk into a coarse puree.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add urad dal, dry red chillies, curry leaves and a pinch of asafoetida.
  3. Switch off the flame and add this over the chutney and mix well. Serve with idli / dosa…
