Roasted Dry Red Chilli – Shallots Chutney ( Chutta Mulaku Ulli Chutney )


4 + 1 dry red chillies
5 + 2 shallots
1 cup grated coconut
small piece of tamarind
salt to taste
1 sprig curry leaves
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1 tbsp oil
water, as required


  1. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and add 4 dry red chillies and 5 shallots and saute / roast till shallots turn slightly brown.
  2. Add 3-4 curry leaves and saute well. Switch off the flame and allow to cool.
  3. In a blender, add roasted red chillies-shallots, grated coconut, salt and tamarind and grind well adding required water to a smooth paste.
  4. Heat 2-3 tsp oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add 2 shallots sliced , 1 dry red chilli and curry leaves and saute.
  5. Then add the ground paste to the tempering and switch off the flame. Mix well and serve with dosa / idli…
