Prawns – Drumstick Leaves / Chemmeen Muringayila Mulakittathu


1/2 kg prawns, cleaned
1 cup muringayila / drumstick leaves
1 tbsp ginger, chopped
1 tbsp garlic, chopped
10-12 shallots, chopped
1 1/2 tbsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2-3 pieces kudampuli
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
1/4 tsp fenugreek powder
2 sprig curry leaves
2-3 tbsp coconut oil


  1. Soak the gamboge / kudampuli in little water for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a manchatti / clay pot and splutter mustard seeds and add fenugreek seeds.
  3. Add chopped ginger, garlic and shallots and saute well.
  4. Add chilli powder and turmeric powder and saute well till raw smell goes.
  5. Add kudampuli and curry leaves and mix well. Add enough hot water and salt and mix well.
  6. Add cleaned prawns and muringayila and cook covered till done.
  7. Add few curry leaves, little coconut oil and fenugreek powder and mix well.
  8. Switch off the flame and serve with rice, pathiri, neer dosa etc…
