Kozhi Mulakittathu / Spicy Red Chicken Curry


1/2 kg chicken, cleaned
2 onions, finely chopped
1 tbsp ginger-garlic, crushed
2 green chillies, finely chopped or crushed
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
3 tbsp kashmiri chilli powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp pepper powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp fennel powder
3 sprigs curry leaves
2 dry red chillies
salt to taste
3 tbsp + 1 tsp coconut oil


  1. Heat coconut oil in a claypot / manchatti and add red chillies and 1 sprig curry leaves.
  2. Add finely chopped onions, crushed ginger-garlic and green chillies and saute till onion turns light golden in colour.
  3. Add kashmiri chilli powder and saute for a minute.
  4. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, pepper powder and garam masala and saute till raw smell goes.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and salt and cook till tomatoes become soft and mushy.
  6. Add fennel powder and saute for a minute.
  7. Add cleaned chicken pieces, enough salt and curry leaves, mix well and cook covered on low-medium flame till chicken is cooked. (Do not add water while cooking chicken, stir in between).
  8. Now add required hot water and cook until the gravy thickens.
  9. Finally add 1 tsp of coconut oil and few curry leaves and switch off the flame.
  10. Serve with rice, pathiri, ghee rice, neer dosa etc…
