Tomato Upma


1/2 cup roasted rava / semolina
1 small onion, finely chopped 
1 tsp ginger, finely chopped
1-2 green chillies, finely chopped
few curry leaves
1 tomato
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp chilli powder
1/4 tsp garam masala
1 1/2 cup water
1/4 tsp asafoetida
1 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dal
salt to taste
1 tbsp coconut oil


  1. Grind tomato to a paste and keep it aside.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and fry urad dal till brown.
  3. Add onion, ginger, green chillies and curry leaves and saute for 2 minutes adding salt.
  4. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and garam masala and mix well.
  5. Add tomato paste and mix well till all the water dries up.
  6. Now add 1 1/2 cup of water to this and when it starts to boil , add asafoetida powder and chopped coriander leaves and mix well.
  7. Add roasted rava slowly and mix well and cook covered at low flame, stirring in between, till all the water has evaporated and cooked.
  8. Remove it from flame and serve hot…
