Fish / Meen Perattu

Ingredients:

400 gm fish pieces
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp kashmiri chilli powder
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
5 dry red chillies
25-30 shallots
small gooseberry sized / 8 gm tamarind
4 tbsp coconut oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1″ piece ginger, chopped
8 garlic cloves, chopped
10 shallots, sliced
2 sprigs curry leaves
salt to taste

Preparation:

  1. In a bowl, add cleaned fish pieces, turmeric powder, kashmiri chilli powder, ginger-garlic paste and salt and mix well with hand. Keep it aside for 20 minutes.
  2. Heat a pan and add dry red chillies and fry till it starts to change to dark brown colour. Keep it aside.
  3. Add about 25-30 shallots in the same pan and fry for 10 minutes at medium flame. Keep it aside to cool.
  4. Then grind fried shallots, dry red chillies, tamarind adding 1/4 cup of water to a paste and keep it aside.
  5. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add marinated fish pieces and fry at medium flame on both sides and keep it aside.
  6. In the same oil, splutter mustard seeds. Add chopped ginger, garlic, 10 shallots, curry leaves and salt and saute for 2 minutes at medium flame.
  7. Add ground paste and saute well for 1-2 minutes.
  8. Add fried fish and gently mix till well coated with masala. Adjust salt and switch off the flame.
  9. Keep it covered for 10 minutes and then serve as a side dish…
