Green Gram / Cherupayar Mulaku Curry

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cup cherupayar / green gram
8 shallots
3 big garlic cloves
1 crushed garlic
3 tsp chilli powder ( or 10-12 dry red chillies soaked in hot water)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 1/2 tbsp ghee / coconut oil
3 dry red chillies
1 sprig curry leaves
1 crushed garlic
salt to taste

Preparation:

  1. In a pressure cooker, add washed green gram and cook it adding about 4 1/2 cup of water and salt for 1 whistle.
  2. Then reduce the flame and cook for 2 whistles.
  3. Grind together shallots, garlic, chilli powder and turmeric powder adding little water
  4. Add this ground paste to cooked green gram and boil well for 6-7 minutes till the raw smell goes. Adjust the salt.
  5. Heat ghee / coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add dry red chillies, curry leaves and 1 crushed garlic and fry.
