Tomato Coconut Chutney


2 1/2 small tomatoes, chopped
1 garlic clove
1/2 cup grated coconut
2 + 1 dried red chillies
1/2 tsp urad dal
salt to taste
2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1 sprig curry leaves


  1. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan and add urad dal and 2 broken dried red chillies and stir for a minute until urad dal turns golden and dried red chillies turn crisp. Transfer to a plate.
  2. In the remaining oil, saute chopped tomatoes and garlic for few minutes till mushy.
  3. Add grated coconut and salt and cook for a minute. Switch off the flame and let it cool.
  4. Crush dried red chillies and urad dal in the small jar of a blender.
  5. Then add tomato-coconut mixture and grind coarsely. (If you want smooth chutney, add little water and blend again till smooth).
  6. Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add 1 dried red chilli and curry leaves. Add this to chutney and mix well. Serve with idli / dosa/ uttappam etc..
