Mint Coconut Chutney / Pudina Chutney


30 gm ( about 1 cup) mint leaves
2 tbsp coriander leaves
10 shallots, chopped
1 big garlic
3 green chillies
small gooseberry sized tamarind
1/4- 1/2 cup grated coconut
1 tbsp + 1/2 tsp urad dal
2 dry red chillies
1 sprig curry leaves
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
salt to taste
1 1/2 tbsp + 2 tsp oil


  1. Heat 1 1/2 tbsp oil in a pan at medium flame and add 1 tbsp urad dal and fry till light golden.
  2. Add chopped shallots, garlic, green chillies, tamarind and salt and saute till it cooked.
  3. Then add mint leaves and coriander leaves and saute for about 15-20 seconds. Switch off the flame and allow to cool.
  4. Now add grated coconut to this and mix well. Then grind it to a paste adding 1/4 cup of water and transfer it to a bowl.
  5. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add 1/2 tsp urad dal, dry red chillies and curry leaves.
