Papaya – Green Gram / Cherupayar Thoran


2 cup raw papaya, grated
1/4 cup green gram/ cherupayar
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
4 shallots
1 garlic clove
3-4 green chillies
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
1 sprig curry leaves
salt to taste
2 tbsp oil


  1. Soak green gram/ cherupayar in water and pressure cook it adding enough water and salt and keep it aside.
  2. Crush grated coconut, turmeric powder, shallots, garlic clove and green chillies together.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  4. Add curry leaves, grated papaya and salt and mix well and cook covered in low flame for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Then add cooked cherupayar and crushed coconut mixture, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
