Churakka Chemmeen Curry / Bottle Gourd Prawns Curry


1 cup bottle gourd, peeled and cubed
1/2 cup prawns, cleaned
1 onion, sliced
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
2 green chillies
1 tomato, chopped
3/4 cup grated coconut
1 tsp cumin seeds
6 shallots
3 tbsp tamarind pulp
1 1/2 tsp chilli powder
1 1/2 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
2 sprig curry leaves
2 dry red chillies
salt to taste
2 tbsp oil


  1. Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds and shallots together to a smooth paste adding little warm water and keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and add fenugreek seeds.
  3. Add sliced onion, ginger-garlic paste and green chillies and saute well.
  4. Add cleaned prawns, chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and mix well for 2 minutes.
  5. Add little warm water and cook. Then add chopped bottlegourd , tomato, curry leaves and salt and cook till done.
  6. Add coconut paste to this and mix well. Add tamarind pulp and mix well.
  7. Heat 1 tsp coconut oil in a pan and add dry red chillies and curry leaves. Add this to curry and mix well. Serve hot…
