Kovakka – Kadala Thoran / Ivy Gourd – Black Chickpeas Thoran


300 gm kovakka/ ivy gourd
1/4 cup black chickpeas / kadala
1 small onion, chopped
3 green chillies, chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 sprig curry leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp chilli powder
1/2 cup grated coconut
1 tsp mustard seeds
salt to taste
1 tbsp oil


  1. Soak kadala/ chickpeas in water and pressure cook it adding enough water and salt and keep it aside.
  2. Wash and chop the kovakka into round pieces.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add curry leaves and crushed garlic and fry.
  4. Add chopped onion and green chillies and saute till transparent.
  5. Add turmeric powder and chilli powder and mix well.
  6. Add chopped kovakka and salt, mix well and add 1/4 cup of water and cook covered on low-medium flame for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Then add cooked kadala to this and mix well. Adjust the salt.
  8. Add grated coconut, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes on low flame till all the water dries up… Remove from flame and serve with rice…
